While working a puzzle with my three-year-old granddaughter a couple of weeks ago I noticed that a couple of the puzzle pieces were broken. I asked Devyn how that happened and she readily admitted that she did it. But then she added that “her Mommy wasn’t mad at her, but she was just disappointed”.
Her comment got me thinking about my relationship with God. I wonder how often God is disappointed by my actions. I wonder how many times His heart is wounded by my insensitive words or my selfish attitude. You can almost hear the disappointment in Jesus voice as He speaks to His sleepy disciples in the garden of Gethsemane. “Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? (Matthew 26:40) I believe it was a look of disappointment, not anger, that broke Peter’s heart after his third denial of Jesus. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So Peter went out and wept bitterly. (Luke 22:61-62) I don’t know about you, but I almost think I’d rather God be mad at me, than disappointed. When I stand before Him someday I don’t want to see disappointment on His face for what might have been or what I could have done. I want to know that I’ve done my best to please Him. The apostle Paul puts it this way: For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; (Colossians 1:9-10) This is my prayer for you and for myself this morning. That we might never disappoint, our Lord, but that we might please Him in every way. Have a great week!
