This has been the theme of time-travel movies and books for years and it’s not really that new among historians. There is an old book published in the 1950’s called IF IT HAD HAPPENED OTHERWISE that explores this theme. Winston “Churchill wrote a chapter in it asking the question, What if Robert E. Lee had won the battle of Gettysburg? Another chapter explored What if John Wilkes Booth had missed when he shot Abraham Lincoln? What if Napoleon had escaped to America? What if Nazi Germany had won WWII?
But perhaps the greatest “what if” question of all is “What if Jesus did not rise from the dead on that first Easter Sunday as the gospels claim. The apostle Paul explores this question in some detail in I Corinthians 15. Imagine if there had been no Jesus and no Christian church for the past 2000 years. The ramifications of that are staggering.
But perhaps the most devastating effect would be the change in our view toward death. Erase Easter and there is no hope of heaven. Without Easter there is no expectation of ever seeing our loved ones again. We better enjoy this life, because this is all there is. The bottom line is this – Erase Easter and you erase hope.
The good news, this morning is that Easter is real! The tomb is empty and Jesus is alive! It’s not just a myth. It’s not just a story. It is a historical fact, verified by numerous witnesses. The apostle Paul says Jesus appeared to over 500 at one time after His resurrection. If you’re skeptical of that truth, I encourage you to get a hold of a little book The Case For Easter by Lee Strobel ($1.99/Amazon – great book!) or even better go see the movie, “The Case for Christ” in theaters now. [Keep watching your e-mail. We may be planning a group outing to go see it the next few weeks.]
