Keep Calm and Carry On
I recently ran across a display of t-shirts with several catchy slogans like Keep Calm and Call Mom; Keep Calm and Call Batman; Keep Calm and Eat Bacon or my favorite, Keep Call and Call HR. These sayings originate from the phrase: “Keep Calm and Carry On.” This message first appeared in Great Britain as World War II began in1939. British officials printed it on posters designed to offset panic and discouragement during the war.
In many ways that slogan epitomized the determined spirit of the Brits during those difficult days.
The Israelites, after returning from captivity, were surrounded by enemies who sought to destroy them, yet in spite of their fear they began the work of rebuilding the temple. Once they finished the foundation, their enemies “bribed officials to work against them and frustrate their plans” (Ezra 4:5). They wrote accusing letters to government officials that delayed the project. (Ezra 4:6; 24)
Yet, in spite of setbacks, the Israelites calmly carried on their work. I like Ezra’s response to his critics, “we are servants of the God of heaven and earth” (Ezra 5:11). Obstacles may stand in the way and enemies may assault us, but we can rest in Jesus’ promise: “I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it” (Matthew 16:18 NLT). God will see us through.
Maybe we need to change the slogan – Keep Calm and Call on JESUS. No matter how dark or difficult things get, ultimately we will win! So carry on! Keep loving, serving, praying and working until Jesus comes.
Have a great week!
