A Fork?

                                                                   A Fork?

An elderly Christian lady was told by her doctor that she had about three months to live.  Her condition was terminal.  She met with her pastor and a funeral home director and planned everything.  She picked a casket, chose flowers, selected songs to sing and even shared some favorite Scriptures she would like the pastor to read.  And then, she made a strange request.  She said, “I want to be buried with a fork in my hand.”

The surprised pastor responded, “A fork? Why a fork?”  She smiled and said, “Because it’s going to give you an opportunity to share this story at my funeral.  When I was a little girl, I used to love church suppers.  After the meal was done and people were clearing the dishes, one of the older women in the church would always come over and lean down and whisper to me, save your fork.  And I loved that.  Because I knew something better was coming – apple pie, or cherry cobbler or my favorite chocolate cake.”

“Pastor”, she said, “I want you to tell those at my funeral that I know something better is coming!  That’s the hope we have if we know Jesus.

This dear saint shares the hope of every believer this morning.  We know that to be “absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (II Corinthians 5:8 NKJV).  We have no fear of death or the grave because we know there’s something better coming.

So when my day comes, put a fork in my hand.  Can you just imagine how good the coconut creme pie is going to be in heaven?

Have a great week!
Pastor Barry
