A King is Born

                                                            A King Is Born

In the year 1809 the eyes of the whole world were upon a short, French dictator by the name of Napoleon.  He had conquered Italy, Egypt, and North Africa.  Now he was pushing his way into Austria.

If you had talked to anyone who lived in that year the main topic of conversation would have been Napoleon’s Austrian campaign and the bloody battles that were taking place there.  The world barely noticed that some important babies were born during that year.

Babies who would one day grow up to change their world.  For example, men like William Gladstone the great English statesman was born in that year.  Several great literary geniuses like Alfred Lloyd Tennyson, Oliver Wendall Holmes and Edgar Allen Poe were born that year.  Famous composers Frederic Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn entered the world in 1809.

In that same year a physician named Darwin and his wife would have a son named Charles whose theory of evolution would shake the scientific world.  And in this country in a log cabin in Hodgenville, KY a future president was born ... HIS NAME, ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

The world thought the most important thing happening at that moment was what Napoleon was doing in Austria.  But I doubt there are many who can name a single one of those Austrian battles.  But in the cradles of England, Europe and America the destiny of the world was being shaped.

I think the same thing was true in Bethlehem that night when Jesus was born.  There was no room for them in the inn.  Everyone was too busy to notice a young peasant girl having a baby.

Everyone was concerned about the increase in taxes.  Everyone was talking about what the Romans, what Caesar Augustus was doing.  YET IN THAT STABLE A KING WAS BORN.  A King who will  REIGN FOREVER AND EVER HIS POWER AND DOMINION WILL HAVE NO END.

We may be concerned this morning about election recounts, terrorist attacks, and global warning.  Our thoughts might be focused on making it through the holidays or buying that special present.  Our schedule might be full with Christmas parties, parades and special programs.  But in all the busyness, let’s not forget what really matters.

Presidents and earthly kings may come and go, but we have a King who will reign forever.  Is He your King this morning?

For unto us a Child is born,
               Unto us a Son is given;
Ant the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
               Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
               Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
               There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.

                              Isaiah 9: 6-7 NKJV

Have a great week!
