Are You Thirsty? A ship became stranded off the coast of South America. While they were waiting on a rescue. They weren’t in danger of sinking, but they faced a critical problem of no fresh water. It appeared the crew would die of thirst. What irony! Water was all around them, as far as the eye could see, but it was salt water. They were in a situation similar to that described by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Rime of the Ancient Mariner: “Water, water everywhere, and all the boards did shrink; Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink.” A lookout sighted a ship in the distance. The captain ordered a distress signal to be sent, informing the ship of their plight. The reply came back: “Dip it up.” At first, the troubled sailors thought the crew of the passing ship was mocking them. However, when they lowered a bucket, they discovered it was fresh water. They thought they were on the high seas, but they were actually in the mouth of the mighty Amazon River. The Amazon releases a plume of fresh water into the Atlantic from 60 to 120 miles wide. As I look around this morning I see many who are dying of spiritual thirst. They are searching for something that will satisfy and bring meaning to their lives. Jesus offers us “living water”. Listen to what He says to a thirsty Samaritan woman in John 4. Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14). In another place Jesus makes us this incredible offer. On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:37-38) There’s no need to stay thirsty this morning. Jesus offers us the water that satisfies. Have a great week! Pastor Barry If you would like to comment or if you have questions for Pastor Barry you may direct those to bglawson75@gmail.com.
