Tuesday on the Run
Recently my 5-year-old grandson, on his way to T-ball practice, made this random comment to his parents: “You know, it wouldn’t be much fun to play hide-n-seek with God, because He would already know where you were hiding.” Then he added, “well it would be fun, but the game wouldn’t last very long.” Maybe if the baseball thing doesn’t work out, he might become a theologian. Rhys’ comment got me to thinking about some people in the Bible who tried to hide or run from God. Adam and Eve, after eating the forbidden fruit, covered themselves and tried to hide from God in the Garden of Eden. A rebellious prophet named Jonah caught a ship heading in the opposite direction from Nineveh, the place God wanted him to go. However, a storm and three days in the belly of a whale short-circuited his escape. The Psalmist David, who spent nearly a year trying to avoid God after his sin with Bathsheba finally admits “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.” (Psalm 139: 7-8.) The bottom line is you can’t hide from God. And why would you even want to? God pursues us not to destroy or punish us, but to save and deliver us. Jesus says, “God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him”. (John 3:17) Give up on hiding this morning. Quit running and let Christ find you. He already knows where you’re hiding anyway! Have a great week!
