A Lamb's Price

8/12/2015

 A few years ago our denominational magazine called The Wesleyan Advocate featured an article about a little girl named Jan, who as part of the 4-H Club raised a pet lamb named Scottie.  Though her parents had warned her that auction day would come, and she would have to give Scottie up, she wasn’t prepared for how difficult it would be.  Scottie had somehow managed to snuggle her way into Jan’s heart.

Evelyn Bence, Jan’s cousin who wrote the story, tells about that dramatic day at the county fair.  Jan led out her lamb and squatted down beside him as the statistics were read.  108 pounds, shown by Janice Lightop.  The bidding started at 60 cents a pound and quickly moved to $1.00 then it began to inch up $1.08, $109 $1.10 Sold

Evelyn says that Jan tried to look brave as she led Scottie to turn him over to his new owner.  Much to her surprise it turned out to be her uncle Jack Bence.  Jan’s 10th birthday was the next day and this was her gift .. she could keep her lamb.  According to Jan it was the best present she had ever had.  I like the way Evelyn Bence ends her article She says, “A lamb’s price had been paid.  It sounded familiar.  It sounded like love had paid the price.”

Isn’t that what Jesus did for us at Calvary.  Isn’t that the message of Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  At Calvary a lamb was not redeemed.  A lamb had to die to pay the price for you and me.

There’s an old hymn we don’t sing that much anymore that says:

            Love found a way to redeem my soul
            Love found a way that could make me whole;
            Love sent my Lord to the cross of shame,
            Love found a way -O praise His holy name.

Take a few moments and thank Him for His amazing love

Have a great week!
