Plodding

In England William Carey was a shoemaker and a part-time preacher.  He went to India as a missionary in 1793.  There he translated the Bible into several languages, founded a Christian college, taught languages, and helped abolish widow burning and infanticide.  When he was asked later in his ministry how he accomplished what he did, Carey humbly said, “I can plod.  Few people know what they can do until they try, and persevere in what they undertake.”
William Carey almost single handedly launched the modern mission’s movement.  And he did it not by some flashy programs that led to instant success.  He did it by continually being faithful and plodding onward.  Carey labored for 7 years without seeing a single convert.  Those were years of great discouragement, debt and constant battles with disease.  His beloved wife, Dorothy’s mind deteriorated and she eventually died.  Yet, Carey kept preaching and plodding and things changed.

The Apostle Paul encourages us to keep “plodding”.  In Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”.  At times it may seem like we are making little progress, but if we just keep at it, eventually we will see results.  Occasionally, I need to remind myself that God has not called us to be successful, but to be fruitful.  Keep plodding. Eventually, you will get there.

Have a great week!
Pastor Barry

P.S. “I plodded through a 3 mile run this morning with great difficulty.  I’m continuing in faith            believing that if I keep it up, it’s going to eventually get easier.”

P.S.S.  A special offering will be taken on Sunday for the hurricane victims in Texas
