Resist the Devil They call it “The Devil’s Footprint.” It’s a foot-shaped impression in the granite on a hill beside a church in Ipswich, Massachusetts. According to local legend the “footprint” happened one fall day in 1740, when the evangelist George Whitefield preached so powerfully that the devil leaped from the church steeple, landing on the rock on his way out of town. Though it’s only a legend, the story calls to mind an encouraging truth from God’s Word. James 4:7 reminds us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Have you sensed the Devil attacking you in recent days? The good news is we can resist him and put him to flight. The Bible tells us that because of God’s grace “sin is no longer our master” (Romans 6:14). According to I Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” I’ve found that one of the best ways to send the Devil packing is to begin to praise the Lord. Sing a praise chorus or hymn, read a Psalm of praise (Psalm 100 is a good choice), or just start making a list of all it the wonderful things God has done for you. Who knows, you might just find the Devil’s footprint beside your front porch as he runs from the sound or praise. Have a great week!
